Debra Yates works in several mediums including painting,
drawing, mosaic and sculpture. She also works as a freelance
architectural and landscape designer. She is a native
“Conch” and lives in Key West, Florida. Yates has traveled
extensively in her career, working and studying in New
York City, Miami and Italy. In Brazil, Yates developed
a long-time friendship and association with Roberto
Burle Marx, the father of modern landscape design.
Her art emerges from diverse cultural backgrounds,
achieving balance through her strong sense of color
and shape. Yates does not assign titles to her abstract
work as she prefers to leave the interpretation up
to the viewer. She describes her creative process
in formal terms as “an evolution of layering – of
painting, color and texture.” Her paintings can be
viewed as opulent structural color fields; landscapes
of gesture, form and passion.
