Controversial and Prescient
WPA Era Paintings

November 18 - December 31, 2006

Bravura art and objects takes a bold step by showing a series of controversial and prescient paintings by Nahum Tschacbasov (1899 -1984); works created under the aegis of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), F.D.R.’s New Deal Program initiated to create jobs for unemployed Americans suffering through the Great Depression. Several paintings will be shown together for the first time in 68 years. First exhibited in 1938 at New York’s ACA (American Contemporary Artists) Gallery, Madonna and Child with Gas Masks created a stir in 1939 when exhibited at the AAA (Associated American Artists) Gallery under the title Wartime Madonna. It was used that year to illustrate a Sunday Worker Newspaper article, "Women of the World Don’t Want This War"; today, a full-size reproduction hangs in London as part of the Imperial War Museum’s The Children’s War show. We are showing two versions of the "Madonna", the first 1938 Mantegna – inspired work and a second, larger 1939 version which served as the linchpin of Tschacbasov’s pastel hued, palette-knife-painted works of 1939-1941. Other exhibited paintings include The Ploughers (Human Harvest), Thanksgiving Dinner (Satiety), Choir Boys (with gas masks) and The Clinic; a highly structured work that offers a startling glance at the ‘blindness’ and complexity of the healthcare system. For the Holidays the gallery is also showing: Paintings, prints, contemporary photographs, costume & fine jewelry; including selections from the new one-of-a-kind Bravura Amber Collection and extensive bakelite jewelry; Scandinavian, German & Austrian mid 20th century ceramics; extraordinary Murano glass; African, Oceanic & Pre-Columbian art and objects d’art suitable for holiday giving. Vintage American aluminum Christmas Trees decorated with old & new whimsical ornaments add a touch of glitz, kitsch, glamour and nostalgia to our sparkling gallery by the sea. A NEW line of affordable,Classic-Inspired modern home furnishings and Unique Studio Furniture and Sculpture by Wainscott artist Ryan Bollmann will be showcased for the Holiday Season.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU!
