Bravura
art and objects gallery is proud to have the first opportunity
to introduce the work of photographer Chris Foster to the public.
Chris
Foster, Photographs: Then & Now, introduces
never before viewed images from the 1960s British rock scene and
new images of the serene Hamptons circa 2006.
This
exhibit presents two chapters of the artist¹s life telling
a story of how time, subject and medium serve as germane elements
in the complex creative equation of creating a photograph. Although
the subjects are worlds and decades apart from the 1960s British
rock scene to the serene Hamptons circa 2006 Foster¹s work
is consistent in its focus on composition and form.
Chapter
one consists of 15 images shot on film in the late 1960s while
Foster lived in his hometown, London, England. In those swinging
days he frequented concerts and documented now legendary R&B
and Rock and Roll performers. The exhibit shows never before viewed
images of Tina Turner (with Ike), Little Richard, Elton John, Rod
Stewart, Ron Wood, Carlos Santana and a host of other music greats
in beautifully composed, candid, often insightful and sometimes
blunt black & white.
Fast
forward to the early twenty-first century in Amagansett, Long Island.
Foster remains an avid photographer, with new passions, new interests
and a new focus. He is now immersed in a different culture, a different
pace and is presented with the extraordinary natural beauty of
the East End. Here and now, in full color, Foster has produced
miraculous digital images depicting the land, sea, fauna and folk
of coastal Long Island. Ten of these new images have been selected
from the large body of his current work.
Moving
from the UK to the USA, from Rock and Roll to rolling surf, from
analog to digital, from black & white to color, these two chapters
in Foster¹s life make for a really good read. The show
is a fun look at what was then, with a clear and romantic perspective
of what is now.
ABOUT
THE ARTIST
Chris Foster recently moved to Long Island from London, England
where he has been a professional photographer all his working
life. Born in 1949,
his early career was spent aiming his camera at up-and-coming rock stars of
the day, some of whom are now mega-stars and still performing. In the
early 70s he found a riverside studio in Chelsea which enabled him to explore
other areas in photography, eventually sharpening his focus on still-life,
location and architectural subjects with international and commercial commissions. In
2005, Chris swapped the city lights of London for the natural light of Long
Island. He now lives in Amagansett. As a keen windsurfer, fly fisherman, cyclist
and kite flyer, Chris found the lure of the pristine outdoors of the Hamptons
irresistibly photogenic. |
